2002, a good year!
In 2002, CB bankcard activity was in line with the trend noted since the smart card was launched, that is to say, a continuous and steady increase in all areas. The first indicator, the total number of CB bankcards (45.4 million) was up last year by 4.8% over 2001. CB bankcards are increasingly used as a means of payment with an average of 125 transactions per card per year. The total number of payment and cash withdrawal transactions was up 10.4%, topping the 5 billion mark. In value, they were up by 11.6% to a total of 265.9 billion euros.
The number of payments by card per year was up 5.9% from 92 to 98, the highest rise in a decade! Finally, 2002 also saw a large upswing in CB card activity abroad: the number of payments and withdrawals surged 12.9% compared with a 3.6% rise in 2001.
In 2002, the number of CB bankcards rose 4.8% over 2001.
