Cartes Bancaires recently reiterated the conditions
required for the development of distance selling by CB card.

The figures are proof enough: e-commerce is catching on in France.
In 2002, 3.2 million French consumers made online purchases, and their
average basket is getting weightier. Jean-Pierre Buthion from Cartes
Bancaires reiterated at the press meeting on 27 February last, the
essential conditions required for the development of e-commerce. First,
boost consumer trust through the protection of their personal data
and ensure retailer security (payment guarantees and buyer authentication).
The second series of conditions covers the provision of solutions
suited to all distance selling channels and not just the Web, making
retailers and consumers aware of best practices, and ensuring all
stakeholders have a clear visibility of payment solutions (of which
there are still too many). “We need to work with consumers and
their representatives to implement simple access and transaction systems,
and work with retailers to ensure they are aware of best practices,
security requirements (labels, checks, etc.), and CB payment guarantees”,
explained Jean-Pierre Buthion.
On a technical and operational level, it is also necessary to promote
a reference payment architecture, secure solutions approved by Carte
CB, and define mobile phone payment specifications. And lastly, a
final condition involves working jointly with public authorities to
combat cyber crime, ensure the protection of personal data and promote
e-signatures.
