Eurosmart is an international association based in Brussels. It is
the worldwide voice for European companies in the smart card sector
(card, equipment, semi-conductor manufacturers, etc.). Chaired since
May 2003 by Olivier Piou, Chairman of Schlumberger Smart
Cards and Terminals, Eurosmart has around 30 members including representatives
of Giesecke and Devrient, Oberthur Card Systems, Gemplus, Infineon,
and soon.
Within the context of its actions to develop the global smart card
market, the association acts as an expert in dealings with national
and international organisations. This role is particularly appreciated
when issues of security and confidentiality are addressed, leading
to offers of solutions that integrate a higher level of guarantees
to operators.

In close relation with European Union institutions, Eurosmart participates
in various initiatives launched by the European Commission and is
regularly consulted regarding research and development projects. The
association also publishes research and statistics to provide a better
understanding of the smart card economy and business. After long playing
a merely technical role that consisted of assisting with the deployment
of major systems, Eurosmart, under the impetus of its new chairman,
is now shifting its emphasis to standardising and simplifying procedures,
notably where certification is involved. In this respect, it is a
reference player for Cartes Bancaires with regard to the EMV migration
now underway. |
