"Which bankcard system for Europe?" Mid-October, Cartes Bancaires co-organised a conference on this topic in Brussels.

On 15 October 2003, Cartes Bancaires co-organised at the European Parliament in Brussels, a conference-debate entitled "Which bankcard system for Europe?"
The conference was in the form of two roundtables. The first, chaired by Chista Randzio Plath, President of the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, addressed the diversity of national systems and the harmonisation of payment systems in Europe in order to promote the emergence of products and services on the basis of interoperable, or even common, payment infrastructure.
The second roundtable, chaired by Philippe Herzog, Euro MP, examined the European identity of the bankcard, and the cooperation between Europe and the United States. The agenda included: generalisation of smart cards and PIN numbers, the harmonisation of anti-fraud measures, and the introduction of consistent legislation.
