With the wind fairly in the smart bank card's
sails, the 18th Cartes trade show held in November set a new attendance
record. Details below. |
 |
| Larger than last year, and located near the entrance
to Hall 3, the Cartes Bancaires stand at the Cartes 2003 trade
show received many visitors. |

Cartes
and IT Security held from 18th to 20th November 2003 at the
Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre once again confirmed their
status as the world's leading trade shows for smart card professionals
and associated industries (card and chip manufacturers, card embedders,
personalisers, etc.), as well as for new security technologies. The
ever-growing success of this event is evidenced in this year's numbers:
400 exhibitors including major smart card market stakeholders (60%
foreigners), over 14,800 visitors (up 12.8%) from more than 116 pays
(50% foreigners). Then, there were the 1,500 people who attended the
series of 22 conferences on the sector's latest developments, at which
Cartes Bancaires CB was a prominent participant (see
CB MAG no 20). As in past years, the best innovations were
rewarded with "Sésames" awards, and this year's focus
country was Brazil. These highlights provided an overview of the current
trends in the bank smart card and financial services markets, which
are set to grow 12% in 2003, and almost 21% in 2004.
The main reason for this growth is the migration to the international
EMV standard, which will be the standard for all bankcard transactions
in Europe as of 1st January 2005. In all, over 400 million magnetic-strip
cards will have to migrate in Europe to this new standard, and no
fewer than 122 million in the UK. The outlook is good for 2004!

projects steered by Cartes Bancaires were presented. |

Twice as large as last year and located near the entrance to
Hall 3, the Cartes Bancaires stand at Cartes 2003 was more directly
visible. Many trade show visitors stopped at the stand to get
information about the three topical issues Cartes Bancaires
chose to spotlight this year: secure remote payment (presentation
of the 3D-Secure protocol in operation, and Videotel demonstrations),
the European projects steered by Cartes Bancaires (presentation
of the c-TRAVEL project and demonstrations of secure transactions
using three different brands of FINREAD
personal card readers), and finally the migration to EMV in
France and Europe (complete review of the schedule and pilot
tests). All the Cartes Bancaires teams concerned by these particular
issues took turns to greet visitors and present the work in
progress to them. This was also an opportunity to develop contacts
with smart bank card manufacturers, and national and international
partners. |
