Auchan's La Défense store has already made the switch to EMV.
The migration to the EMV chip is continuing in France, notably in the mass retail sector. For example, the Auchan chain began the switch to this new standard in April 2003. "We first of all tested two CB5.2 /EMV Moneyline Eftpos terminals in our superstores in Calais and Boulogne, before launching the first electronic payment pilot operation in Auchan's Petite Forêt store near Valenciennes in May. Today, we have extended the pilot operations to 35 of our stores", explained Philippe Corbillon, Treasurer of Auchan France. "Given the number of shoppers in our stores (20,000 customers per day on average in the La Défense store), and the importance of bankcard payments (46%), this period of tests is essential for validating the operation of the integrated electronic payment solutions we will be adopting before their general rollout." All Auchan's 120 stores in France will migrate to EMV in the first quarter of 2004.
