The French, who are supportive of their public services, would nonetheless like to see them more open to payment by bankcard as evidenced by the results in the Sofrès survey (outranked only by health services). In this area, tangible, albeit limited, progress has been made. Over the past decade, for example, it has become possible in an increasing number of municipalities to pay by bankcard for school canteens, child-minding centre excursions, library dues, and swimming pool and skating rink entrance fees. However, the introduction of this additional service is left to the discretion of the local Town Hall, which explains the wide discrepancies from one municipality to the next.
Certain taxes and duties can also now be paid by bankcard. Most Prefectures and Sub-prefectures accept bankcard payment for car registrations, tax stamps and hunting licences. This is also the case for the TV licence in five regional centres, and even for some fines. Along with the recent rollout of automatic speed cameras on motorways, a new fine payment service by bankcard via the Internet ("amendes.gouv.fr") or telephone was also introduced.
These few examples are evidence that the use of the bankcard facilitates users' everyday life and brings them closer to their public services.
