On 8th and 9th October 2003, the European payment Council (EPC) organised a forum on "Bankcards and Combating Fraud in Europe."

On 8th and 9th October 2003, the European Payment Council (EPC) - in partnership with the European Central Bank, the European Commission, the FBF-French Banking Federation and Cartes Bancaires - organised an international forum in Paris on "Bankcards and Combating Fraud in Europe." The agenda included presentations by Jean-Claude Thébault, Director of Financial Institutions at the Internal Market Directorate of the European Commission; Koenraad de Geest, General Manager of Payments at the European Central Bank; Gérard Hartsink, Chairman of the EPC; representatives of Europol and other European law enforcement agencies; and bankcard experts.
In all, 130 participants from 20 European countries took part in this forum which provided a better understanding of the challenges in combating fraud in the European Union and the measures to be implemented to improve security. The main topics addressed during the two days included: the damage/loss caused by fraud, the means to prevent and detect it better, the good practices to be developed, and the European legislation in force.
