The 3D-Secure technology provides, in particular, cardholder authentication for online purchases.

A common communication protocol between the retailer, the receiving bank and the issuing bank, the 3D-Secure technology (see 3D-secure payment: contents) was presented on Cartes Bancaires's stand at the 2003 'Cartes' trade show.
  Card payment request
When making online purchases from a retailer accepting 3D-Secure payments, the customer enters, on the site, his/her bankcard number and its expiry date.

  Authentication request
On receipt of the data supplied by the customer, the MPI (retailer plug-in that processes the payment operation) sends an authentication request to the customer's bank. In return, it receives a response signed with the customer's agreement.

  Authentication verification
The customer's bank asks the customer to provide online authentication (for example, a password). Its access control server checks the authentication and forwards approval to the retailer.

  Authorisation request
The retailer's bank systematically sends an authorisation request to the customer's bank. The conventional electronic payment system takes over the transaction from this point onward.
