2003, a record year!
Launched in 1997 by the major networks, the EMV standard will be in place in Europe by early 2005. A brief chronology.

• 1997: The new international EMV (Eurocard MasterCard Visa) standard was defined by the major networks and the CB banking community.

• 2001: Protocol Agreement signed between the CB community and representatives of the retail sector establishing the timeframe for adapting Eftpos terminals.

• 2002:
First pilot transaction by EMV card in France.

• 2003:
Signature of a rider to the 2001 protocol agreement on the rollout of the CB5.2 version setting a new timeframe for the migration to EMV.

• 2004:
Migration to the EMV standard for bank cards, acceptance equipment, Eftpos terminals, payment kiosks and ATMs.
