| A row of EMV checkouts in one of Leclerc's 500 stores. |
 |
"We began looking at EMV at the end of 2001",
explained Denis Dargelos, manager of Design and Development at Infomil.
This IT company is a member of the E. Leclerc group and is responsible
for carrying out the migration to EMV of the 13,000 checkouts at 440 stores
by 2005. At present, all stores use an Ingenico solution that is 4 to
8 years old and half the terminals are obsolete. Infomil is taking
advantage of the shift to EMV to upgrade the systems by gradually
equipping them with its own internally developed, integrated electronic
payment solution, known as Evolutel EFT. "The migration to EMV
will be carried out in one of two ways depending on the hardware in
the stores", added Denis Dargelos. "Those stores fitted
with the older checkout systems will be switched to the EMV-compatible
Evolutel EFT solution. At the same time, they will be equipped with
new PIN-pad readers. Otherwise, EMV will simply be downloaded to the
more recent, and therefore CB 5.2 compatible, checkout terminals.
With regard to the Evolutel EFT integrated electronic payment solution,
three E. Leclerc stores have already been operating with EMV pilot
systems since the end of the first quarter 2004. Migration for all
440 E. Leclerc stores processed by Infomil should be completed
by early 2005.
