Blue Book figures
On 14th April 2004, the European Central Bank (ECB) published a new edition of its "Blue Book" on payment systems in the 15 European Union States and its ten new Member States. This document - with its many tables of figures and statistics for 2002 - provides a better understanding of the payment and settlement systems in each European Union Member State. In 2002, 17.5 billion bankcard payment transactions were made in the 25 European Union States. Of this, the share of payments by CB bankcards (4.1 billion) was 23.4% (36.5% in the euro zone). The "Blue Book" also highlights several national differences, for example, the extent of credit transfers and direct debits in Germany, and card payments in the United Kingdom and France.

France and the United Kingdom are the leaders for bankcard use, while in Germany direct debits and credit transfers are more widespread.
