EMV: FAQs
EMV: current status in Europe
All European countries are migrating to the EMV (Europay MasterCard Visa) standard. This applies to the enlarged European Union of 25 countries, totalling almost 500 million bankcards (17.5 billion payment transactions). Current status: in the Europe of the original 15 Member States, over 21% of bankcards (out of a total of 470 million), 13% of Eftpos terminals and over 32% of ATMs have migrated to EMV. While the rollout of this standard is now underway in all countries, the rate of progression is not the same everywhere. Some, such as the United Kingdom, have made far greater headway. These differences are attributable to the extent of the investment involved and the complexity of the technological changes required.
