While small independent retailers and large and medium retail chains
obviously have different relations with their acquirer bank, they
still have the same expectations where the CB system is concerned.
"As the Single European Payment Area becomes a reality, we are
particularly interested in any advances that will effectively help
combat cross-border fraud", admitted Xavier de Lavit, Manager
of Financial Services for Leroy Merlin. He particularly values "the
homogeneity of the French system", compared with the situation
in other European countries where his brand operates.
Security is also a major concern for smaller retailers, such as Francis
Cayeux, who has owned a ready-to-wear fashion shop in France's Loir-et-Cher
region since 1994. "For purchases over a certain amount, I am
always reassured when the payment is made with a CB card rather than
by cheque." The use of this method of payment has grown steadily
since he opened his shop, accounting for around 80% of purchases today.
"My customers enjoy the fact that their card is not subject to
a minimum amount. This is one of the things I negotiated with my bank
from which I also lease my Eftpos terminal. I opted to lease because
that way I am always assured of having the latest equipment. |
