All the hardware and software used to operate the CB system will have
to be upgraded to handle the EMV rollout. This also applies to the
remote collection centres which Eftpos terminals call during the night
to upload all the transactions made during the day ready for processing
by the SIT* and clearance by the banks. "As EMV transactions
contain more data than B0' transactions, in some cases, the capacity
of the telecommunications equipment and hardware used may have to
be upgraded so the remote collection centres can handle the additional
transactions," explained Pierre Juhen, Director, IT and Networks
for Cartes Bancaires.
For their part, the maintenance companies responsible for maintaining
and updating Eftpos terminal software are ready to handle the EMV
rollout. "Our maintenance contracts usually guarantee remote
or on-site service within 8 working hours following a call,"
explained André Vandendriessche, Marketing Manager for Datacod
which established an EIG**, "Alliance Monétique",
with 14 other maintenance companies. "For us, the migration
to EMV will mean the replacement of around one third of all Eftpos
terminals in service in France. The maintenance operations directly
linked to the migration have only really get underway in September."
*SIT: the central interbank clearance & settlement system.
** EIG : Economic Interest Group. |
