In northern France, an increasing percentage of
payments is made with EMV bank cards because of the influx of British
customers. |
|
The switch to EMV is progressing in the UK. Out of the country's 134.2 million
cards in circulation, over 57% of bankcards (or 25.6 million)
have already been switched to EMV, and the new smart card with its
chip and PIN is gradually gaining everyday acceptance. British retailers
are not alone in benefiting from this revolution. On the French side
of the Channel, retailers in northern France, notably in Calais because
of its proximity to the UK, traditionally have a strong British clientele.
Some months, bankcard payments by British customers account for up
to 75% of the total payments booked by the region's hypermarkets.
EMV is providing enhanced security, reliability and payment guarantees
for these purchases from both small retailers and leading brand stores
in northern France. They couldn't be happier with the harmonisation
of payment standards in Europe. |
