The 19th Cartes and IT Security trade shows held
from 2nd to 4th November 2004 at the Parc des Expositions de Paris
Nord Villepinte exhibition centre in Paris confirmed the recovery
of the bank smart card market announced last year. The first evidence
of this was the 406 exhibitors including the major stakeholders
of the smart card market, the 15,000-plus visitors from 121 countries
(52% non-French), and the 1,500 conventioneers that attended
this major annual event. All the participants remarked on the market's
renewed dynamism. Indeed from 2003's timid 12% growth, the bank smart
card market should report growth of around 21% for 2004 according
to the Eurosmart association.
This growth is largely driven by the European countries' migration
to the EMV standard.
In this favourable context, and as in past years, Cartes Bancaires
invited the stakeholders in the electronic payment sector to visit
its stand which was located immediately adjacent to the entrance to
Hall 3 providing improved visibility. On the walls, large posters
(20 years of CB interbanking and the smart card's migration to the
new EMV standards) caught the attention of the many visitors who stopped
to view the several displays dealing with various current issues:
the Cartes Bancaires website (www.cartes-bancaires.com), work on the
functional specifications for the purchase card, and the operation
of new TV set top boxes using the "Embedded FINREAD" standard.
The progress made on the European projects for improving the security
of remote payments and e-commerce was presented by CB through demonstrations
of 3D Secure transactions.
Last, but not least, Cartes Bancaires provided a complete review of
the migration to the new EMV international standard (status in France,
Research and Approvals, etc.).
The Department of Assessments and Approvals (DEA) presented an original
initiative in the form of CB-EMV auto-assessment kits for masked components
and acceptance systems. "Developed by CB, these kits are very
easy to use and enable manufacturers to test the compliance of their
version of the EMV software before applying for approval", explained
Raoul Biard, Director of Assessments and Approvals. It's now up to
the manufacturers... |
