EMV: meeting
our goals!
The growth in eAdministration will necessitate the implementation of simple and easy-to-use communication solutions, such as contactless technology and eSignatures (see interview opposite).
Used in the public transport sector (for example the"Navigo" pass used on the RATP and RER public transport networks in the Paris region) or for access badges, contactless technology could be adopted within five to seven years for some CB bankcards to meet the needs of certain markets or sectors. "It would extend the range of services available, improve card reader reliability (elimination of fouled contact points), maintenance (no more obstructions in reader slots), and ease of use as cardholders would no longer risk forgetting their card in the reader", explained René Beltrando, Manager of New Technology for Cartes Bancaires. This technological migration, however, brings with it both technical and IT challenges.
Security is another major concern. CB has contracted Gemplus to carry out a study to identify the risks and implement the appropriate actions. The last, and not the least, obstacle to the growth of contactless technology is the additional cost of the cards (all the more so if they combine contact and contactless technology), and the cost of rolling out a new generation of ATMs and Eftpos terminals. Stay tuned...
