In France, distance selling improved markedly in 2003 and this trend should continue into 2004 according to the annual study released by the Banque de France in Roubaix at the end of December. Distance selling sales were up 3% in 2003 over 2002 mainly because of the increase in sales in the textile-clothing sector. With a global distance selling market of 10.5 billion euros for products and services, France ranks third in Europe behind Germany and the UK.
In volume, distance selling was also up (2.1% in 2003 and 2.7% for the first 10 months of 2004) largely due to the growth in Internet sales. The CB bankcard is widely used as the payment method for these purchases, as confirmed by TNS Sofres's survey last November: 26% of cardholders used their card to pay for Internet purchases in 2004, compared with 21% in 2003 and 13% in 2002.
