To ensure the interoperability of public service cards, a project was launched at the end of 2003 by Gixel, an association of 70 French manufacturers in the interconnection, component and electronic sub-assembly industries, in association with Deutsch Industry Forum (comprised of three German manufacturers). Under Gixel, the IAS specifications have been defined by Axalto, Gemplus, Oberthur, Sagem and Thalès. The aim is to have these specifications adopted by 2007 as a European standard by the CEN (European Committee for Standardisation), and as an international standard by ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation). Cartes Bancaires and the banks - to which these specifications were submitted mid-December - will now be able to analyse the possibility of their use in the banking sector as well.
