A first in the United States: in 2003, e-Payments (bank or credit
cards, electronic fund transfers, etc.) outpaced the volume of cheque
payments. According to a study by the Federal Reserve (FED), Americans
made 44.5 billion electronic payment transactions in 2003 compared
with 36.7 billion by cheque.
In value, cheques still hold the upper hand: they accounted for 39,300 billion
dollars compared with 27,400 billion dollars for ePayments. However,
according to the FED, the situation is about to change: at the current
rate, ePayments (up 13.2% between 2000 and 2003) should exceed cheques
(up just 4.3% in the same period) in 2007. |
