Last year in France, one out of every 75 payments made by CB bankcard was to SNCF (French Railways): 60% of the national rail company's sales are now made using CB cards through its network of
4,000-plus ticket machines which are currently being upgraded to the EMV standard. Rollout of new ticket machines serving the regional rail network (one quarter of the total) was completed at the end of March 2005.
The 1,200 machines of the inter-city network (TGV high speed trains), which were installed in the 1980s, will migrate and be replaced by new machines in the second quarter of 2005.
"Prototypes have been installed at pilot sites, such as Montparnasse Station (Paris), to ensure that they are user-friendly", explained Didier Pinson, Manager of Payment Acceptance at SNCF.
The ticket machines throughout the Ile-de-France network (the remaining third of the total number of machines) will also be changed to accommodate the introduction of the new "Navigo" monthly pass. Their migration to EMV will be completed by the end of this summer.
