ABN Amro, the largest bank in the Netherlands, is now offering its customers EMV smart cards using a pin code.

In the latest stage in the migration to EMV in the Netherlands, customers with the first EMV cards recently issued by ABN Amro will benefit from the PIN-based security when making purchases. They will also be able to monitor their purchases online. ABN Amro has undertaken a seven-year approval process in cooperation with payment service provider TSYS (Total System Service). All Eftpos terminals and ATMs were switched to the EMV standard in 2004; the current phase involves all new cards being issued under the new standards. As the Netherlands has not been one of the countries pioneering the migration to EMV, it can now benefit from the experience of its more advanced neighbours (United Kingdom, France and Belgium), and ensure the rollout runs smoothly. The Maestro debit card will also be made compatible with the new system in accordance with SEPA recommendations.
