JCB, the leading player in the payment card industry in Japan, is also one of the global payment brands alongside Visa and MasterCard. This international dimension is reflected in its network of over 12 million points
of acceptance in 190 countries.
To ensure its continuing growth, JCB has opened 29 offices around the world and has formed alliances with over 320 banks and leading financial institutions. The Japanese are above all attracted to credit cards for their ease of use and the range of services they provide. In Japan, being the leading card issuer and merchant acquirer, JCB has developed a broad range of value-added services, including its global network of JCB Plazas reserved for cardholders travelling overseas. Available in 31 major cities worldwide, JCB Plazas provide a range of services, such as, ticketing, hotel reservations, card replacement, addresses of doctors and medical centres, along with JCB Shopping & Dining Passports with a selection of merchants and promotions. As a driver in the Japanese payment card industry, JCB started issuing smart cards compliant with the new EMV standard in December 2001, and has undertaken to promote a compatible international infrastructure. At the end of 2004, JCB became a one-third shareholder in EMVCo in order to participate alongside Visa and MasterCard in the creation and administration of the joint EMV specifications. Over half of JCB cards are EMV-compliant and its EMV migration is expected to be completed in 2008.
