5.91 billion CB operations in 2004! The volume of transactions is
daunting, especially given that records just keep on being broken
apace with the extension of CB bankcard usage. The latest record dates
from Saturday, 1st October 2005: 9,328,096 authorisations and over
34.5 million operations! Holiday periods aside, a close examination
of the network's activity curves tells us a lot about French consumer
habits. The introduction of the 35-hour working week has resulted
in a peak in transactions late on Friday afternoons (with an average
of 7 million authorisations in 2004). Logging more than 8 million
authorisations, Saturdays remain the prime shopping day of the week,
with a concentration in activity late afternoon. Over the year, peaks
in CB network activity can be seen at the end of June, in September
and December, with volumes that reach or exceed an average of 45 million
payment and withdrawal authorisations per week. These peak periods
correspond to annual sales, holidays, back-to-school expenses, and
the Christmas period.
While these trends remain the same, the volumes increase steadily
each year, as consumers increasingly develop the habit of paying for
small purchases by bankcard. This trend is already well underway in
some Scandinavian countries where small change is actually tending
to disappear. |
