authorisations a year.
It is a minor revolution. In the past, the RCB network operated on proprietary technology. The transaction flow capacity was less than 2 billion transactions a year. Today, CB has adopted IP technology for its e-rsb network. This Internet standard provides several advantages along with Unix servers. This technology enables the e-rsb network to process up to 10 billion authorisations a year by simply adding extra hardware. It is an open architecture that provides its users with a high degree of flexibility. The fact that those banks still operating under X25 were able to switch to e-rsb without any problems is proof of this flexibility.

Gilles Grière, Deputy Director IT and Networks at Cartes Bancaires.
"We put interconnection systems in place to enable e-rsb to process flows in parallel with the old RCB system", explained Gilles Grière, Deputy Director IT and Networks at Cartes Bancaires. Banks have a period of grace through to the end of 2006 in which to migrate their system from X25 to IP.
The switch to an open architecture provides another advantage for Cartes Bancaires: the possibility of effectively developing new services without being tied to any given manufacturer. All this growth capacity is made available to banks; they will take advantage of it to develop new services for their personal and retail customers.
