The programme for EMV migration was launched in October 2003 in the United Kingdom. According to 2004 figures published in the first half of 2005 by APACS* (Association of Payment Clearing Services), the UK is now the most advanced country in Europe in terms of its migration. The threshold of 100 million smart cards has been reached, over 38 million UK residents now have an EMV card.
The United Kingdom also ranks first in Europe for purchasing card use. This programme, launched in 1997, now involves over 650 suppliers. Each month, purchases are made for a total of over 40 million pounds sterling (60 million euros).
