The Danish payments system is administered by
PBS, a group that was restructured in January 2003 as a holding company
owned by banks, including the National Bank of Denmark.
Active also in Norway, Sweden and Iceland, PBS is now the leading
stakeholder in the bankcard sector in the Nordic countries. The group
operates as a service provider to over 400 issuers (totalling 4.9
million bankcards), and over 150 acquirers (representing 145,000 retailers).
PBS is responsible for the development of the payment infrastructure
in Denmark and the construction and migration to a chip-based platform.
With this payment card platform, PBS offer companies and banking institutions
the possibility of outsourcing a wide range of card services. Thus,
banking institutions and retail chains can operate efficiently, and
approach the Nordic countries as a single market. PBS processes all
transactions in the same manner irrespective of their origin and irrespective
of whether they were conducted on national payment cards, international
cards or private-label cards.
Begun in 2004, the migration to EMV has gone hand-in-hand with the
switch to smart cards. Since 1st January 2005, all Dankort debit cards
issued on the Danish market are EMV certified.
This has constituted a true revolution for the Danes who up until
now had been used to the magnetic strip. Over the last two decades,
the Dankort has become the preferred means of payment
for Danish consumers.
Furthermore, the success of the national debit card system has resulted
in weak growth in the number of credit cards issued in Denmark.
