DDA: further security with third-generation bank cards
By making each transaction unique, a DDA card constitutes a major step forward in security.
With the launch of Dynamic Data Authentication (DDA), the current year should see a major rollout of third-generation bank cards in Europe.
The technological advance of dynamic data authentication is a decisive step forward that will make transactions considerably safer.

A unique signature for each transaction
After two generations of bank cards with static authentication, the new DDA card will contain a private key and a cryptoprocessor enabling it to generate a unique signature for each transaction. This unique signature is based on random data that differs each time the card is used. The authentication data is provided by the card itself to the Eftpos terminal. After an initial pilot phase in 2004, the CB DDA cards were introduced in 2005. By late March 2006, 270,000 cards had been issued. This is only the beginning of the rollout of this new technology.

To date, 85% of bank card terminals have migrated to the international EMV (Europay MasterCard Visa) standard and so are ready to accept DDA cards. Performance tests in early 2006 on various CB acceptance systems have shown that the time required for the DDA system is imperceptible to the cardholder at the point of sale. In addition to its basic functions, the DDA card has a cryptoprocessor that can offer new services to both cardholders and merchants, for example, e-signatures.

"France hopes to reach 25 million EMV/DDA cards by July 2007"
“2006 will mark the real start to the rollout of Dynamic Data Authentication cards in Europe. France, Austria, Germany and Sweden, along with other countries, such as Indonesia and even Japan are already issuing DDA cards. France has set itself the ambitious goal of 25 million EMV/DDA CB cards by July 2007, that is half the CB bankcards currently in circulation (51.5 million at the end of 2005).”
