CB transactions:
A new records |
 |
The first half of 2006 has confirmed the position of CB cards for
consumers; their use has been steadily increasing for the past ten years. |
 |
|
 |
Bank cards are now clearly well anchored
in French consumers' habits. This is aptly reflected in the three
successive records for the number of CB card transactions
broken in 2005. On Friday 23rd December 2005, 9.7 million
authorisation requests transited via the e-rsb© network,
that is a total of 37 million payment and withdrawal
operations by CB card. Three
million more than on the same date in 2004,
which was already a record. This figure was
the crowning touch for a year that had already
been marked by two exceptional days.
As in years past, the summer sales led to
a peak in CB card transactions. From
27th June to 3rd July, CB bankcard holders
made almost 174 million transactions, that
is, almost 10% more than in a normal week.
Saturday, 2nd July, alone accounted for around
32 million transactions. Saturday, 1st October,
was also a historical date, with 9.3 million
authorisations and 34.5 million transactions.
• Strong boost to the number of authorisations.

10.2
million authorisation requests
on Saturday, 6rd May 2006. |
 |
|
 |
After a calmer first quarter 2006, a new record
was set on Saturday, 6th May, when the
e-rsb© network processed over 10.224 million
authorisations, of which 6.828 million for
payments and 3.25 million for withdrawals.
These figures confirm the strong increase
in the number of payments (more than
15% per year), and the steady number of
withdrawals.
These figures confirm the trends logged
in previous years with recurrent peaks: May, summer sales, back-to-school
period and Christmas. Saturday,
when authorisation requests
generally exceed the average
of 8 million, remains
the preferred shopping
day. In just ten
years, the number of
CB card transactions
has more than
doubled, and the total
spent has increased
by a factor of 2.5. |

In France, e-commerce between companies (B2B) remains below its growth potential. To understand what is hindering and driving B2B e-commerce, CB has joined forces with FEVAD* (French Federation of Distance Selling Companies) to carry out an indepth study, "B2B e-commerce, a major challenge for the French economy". The aim is to analyse this market, identifythe best practices and what is hindering its growth, and put forward five recommended measures, including the development of purchasing cards to speed up the penetration of e-commerce.
