| "Gemalto,
a leader in digital security working alongside
banks" |
 |
| Interview: Joël
Pinard |

 |
• Axalto and Gemplus merged on 2nd June 2006 to form Gemalto.
Just what is this new entity?
Joël Pinard: This merger positions Gemalto*
as the global leader in digital security. With activities
in 120 countries, the new group reports sales of
1.7 billion euros. It has 11,000 employees including
1,500 Research & Development engineers. Gemalto
has the critical size to provide the best response
to its clients’ demands, notably its banking
clients.
• What
are your growth prospects in the banking sector and
what approach will you be adopting?
The current rollout
of the DDA-EMV standard in most countries, especially
in Europe, occupies a large part of our activity.
With our recognised security expertise, we have been
working closely with Cartes Bancaires to develop
this standard, especially abroad. The success of
the smart card and the EMV standard is in large part
due to the dialogue in this consultative process.

The European EPAS project awared ITEA label »
 |
| On 25th October 2006, the
European EPAS (Electronic Protocol
Application Software) project -
involving the harmonisation of
exchange protocols used by
Eftpos terminals - was awarded
the ITEA label (a pan-European
programme) issued by the
European manufacturing sector.
This label means the project can
now apply for national state
funding. Also supported by the
EPC (European Payments Council),
this strategic project for banks
and merchants will result in a real
opening up of acquisition in Europe
to areas other than payment.
By including recent changes to
acquisition (loyalty programmes,
etc.), EPAS - project coordinated by
William Vanobberghen, Manager
International Projects, CB - will
ensure the long-term viability of
the new Eftpos terminal standard. |
